Qualifying course in ad hoc and institutional arbitration procedures

Under the patronage of Mr. Fouad Al-Duwairi, President of the Jordanian Construction Contractors Association, the Jordanian Arbitrators Association, in cooperation with the Contractors Association, launched an advanced training course in ad hoc and institutional arbitration procedures on Saturday, August 23, 2020, at the Association’s headquarters in Amman.

The seven-day course, comprising 30 accredited training hours, aims to develop the skills of lawyers, engineers, and other professionals in the field of arbitration, from drafting arbitration clauses and managing proceedings to enforcing and protecting awards from appeals.

The training features a distinguished group of international experts, arbitrators, and specialized academics, including His Excellency Dr. Salah Al-Bashir, His Excellency Dr. Ibrahim Al-Amoush, Dr. Musleh Al-Tarawneh, President of the Jordanian Arbitrators Association, and many other experienced professionals.

The course covers several topics, including: arbitration in FIDIC contracts, institutional arbitration according to the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), drafting arbitration awards, judicial review of arbitration awards, and enforcement procedures. In his opening remarks, the head of the Jordanian Construction Contractors Association emphasized the importance of arbitration as a strategic tool for effective dispute resolution, particularly in the contracting sector. He stated, “Arbitration has become not merely a mechanism for resolving disputes, but a strategic tool for protecting rights and ensuring the efficient and smooth progress of projects. In the contracting sector specifically, when matters become complex, arbitration emerges as a civilized and effective solution, saving time and effort and preventing many disputes that could hinder development.”

He added, “We at the Contractors Association view this course as an important step in promoting a culture of arbitration among participants and equipping them with the skills and knowledge to manage their disputes within a fair and transparent institutional framework.”

The association’s vice president, Dr. Marouf Al-Ghananim, said, “The association has always strived to provide everything beneficial and distinguished to our members. Recognizing the paramount importance of arbitration for contractors as an effective and civilized mechanism for dispute resolution, we strongly support this specialized course, which represents a genuine investment in enhancing the efficiency of the construction sector and protecting contractors’ rights.” For his part, Dr. Musleh Tarawneh, President of the Jordanian Arbitrators Association, said, “The idea for this course arose as a response to the widespread availability of paid courses offered by some entities, which are often devoid of any real substance or benefit. Therefore, we resolved to offer a high-quality program befitting the professionalism of arbitrators and the seriousness of the trainees.”

Dr. Tarawneh added, “To ensure maximum benefit, the course topics were carefully selected, and we were keen to choose lecturers who combine rigorous academic knowledge with extensive field experience, enabling them to share the essence of their practical experiences with the participants in a hands-on context.”

It is worth noting that the course includes practical sessions, case studies, and interactive workshops, providing participants with the opportunity to directly apply the acquired knowledge and exchange experiences with specialists.
